Lighthill Risk Network - Data project

This is an invitation to participate in the creation of a catalogue of datasets relevant to the insurance industry, and a call for you to send your list of data requirements to the Lighthill Risk Network by August 21st.

The Lighthill Risk Network (LRN) is building a comprehensive “Data Catalogue” of datasets relevant to the (re)insurance industry. We will be looking to apply standards to meta-data and formats so that the data can be readily understood and used. The Data Catalogue will sit on the LRN’s dynamic website which will be accessible to all LRN business subscribers as of October 31st 2006.

WHAT ARE YOUR DATA ‘WISH LISTS’?

We are sending out a call to our core member companies and a chosen subset of representative industry users to send us their requests for datasets to include in this catalogue. We encourage ‘blue sky’ thinking such that your teams and staff send us dataset ‘wish lists’, irrespective of assumed price, availability and accessibility. Data requests can be both UK and internationally sourced, and example categories include meteorological data, hazard data, economic and social statistics, and claims data. Further details on this project are outlined in the attached project proposal(LRN_DataCatalogue_070806.pdf).

In addition to your requests for data, we would also like to get some feedback on datasets in the public domain that you find particularly useful and would like to share for incorporation into the Data Catalogue. Come October we will provide you with a link to our web-page(s) that contain the Data Catalogue, which will with time continue to grow.

When you contribute your data requests (to: office@lighthillrisknetwork.org) we will follow up with you on your specific data requirements (e.g. type, geography, resolution, preferred formats). In some instances, we might send you our match for the data that you requested, so that you can see for yourself whether the data matches these requirements. We are also looking for interested individuals to 'pilot' (i.e. review and comment on) the data collected during September and October. Time commitments are as you chose, and you may review the datasets that are of interest to you. The goal of this exercise is to provide meta-data (data about data) - so that the Data catalogue data is usable.

The close date of this call will be August 21st.
